From the point of view of getting pregnant – menstruation is one of the safest times in a woman's cycle (on average – some women, my sister included, do get pregnant when having sex at this time). From the point of view of her catching/transmitting stds this is one of the most dangerous times so I would advise you use a condom anyway.

are you referring to birth control or the morning after pill? Birth control takes about a month to take effect and as long as you take it at the same time everyday you should be fine. The morning after pill should be taken right after you have sex or the following morning to prevent from pregnancy occurring. The man's ejaculant can live inside you for up to 3 days! Meaning if you have unprotected sex Monday, you can end up pregnant on Wednesday!
