What happened to the liberals trying to ban smoking everywhere? All of a sudden it's "OK"?
I have an issue with the ban on it for privately owned businesses. I think the owners of those businesses have been scr*wed by government involvement on this issue.
Obama should not talk up health care reform until he's addressed this with himself, once and for all. The relationship of government with the tobacco companies and the number of smoking-related illness and death along w/the issues of health care are all too close for comfort – particularly when the President himself is sparking them up.
Smoking has been made into a moral issue over recent years. SO many anti-smokers look at smokers like they're garbage. They even go so far as to speak down to them standing on the street. Now, it's no biggie if Obama smokes? It's interesting to me.
edit: Bowen…here is a concept: the government has involved itself with this issue in almost every aspect.
People in certain areas can be cited for smoking in their cars, or outdoors on the sidewalk.
The federal government regulates tobacco. It is legal to sell them, for the $$, but becoming practically illegal to smoke them. You tell ME what the problem is here. They're almost in your living room on this yet we've just elected a new President of said government, who happens to smoke said cigarettes. Get real.
On a human level, nicotine is one of THE most addictive known substances. Factor that in to the above, considering the government's role in particular, and really think about it. It's not such a la-di-da, no big deal like you try to paint it.
Next we'll hear he refuses to wear a seat belt. This is RICH. I'm beginning to really like this guy! LOL

Banning smoking is one of the only things liberals and conservatives are on the same page on.

No, Obama cannot smoke in all places where no one else can smoke. He can smoke in his own home, so we'll see how that works in the White House. Only the second floor is considered "private."

Liberals don't try to ban smoking. Those are right leaning Democrats. (like Clintons and Gores)

The smoking ban came from the UN – just like No Child Left Behind and the light bulb ban.
Well, this is news to me – the great one smokes! Hopefully lung cancer will soon follow.

You guys are really reaching aren't you. I would complain if Obama lit right up sitting next to me. But I also don't complain about anyone smoking in their own house. I have yet to see Obama light up, much less in public.

I never cease to be amazed at the inability of conservatives to understand very simple concepts.
An individual has the right to smoke if they choose to do so. They do not, however, have the right to forcibly expose others to second-hand smoke. That is why smoking is legal, but restricted in public areas.

Hitler was a Jew and didn't have blonde hair or blue eyes. That didn't stop him from implementing his national socialist platform nor will Messiah Obama's hypocrisy stop him from implementing his socialist platform.

Smoking is not ok. I think Obama should stop, but ultimately it's up to him. And it's not just 'liberals' trying to ban smoking.

Republican sin tax = alcohol.
Democrat sin tax = tobacco
much like what happened with alcohol.. an equilibrium has been reached for the time being.

Thats a heavy subject. I think if people want to smoke its there choice its not up to the government to dictate to them what they can and cannot do and where they can do it. Next they will be coming into our homes and telling us we can't drink.

Banning smoking? I thought liberals were for choice. Oh wait, that's right, it's only choice when it comes to killing, not smoking.

I don't think that any of those liberals are saying it's "OK".
You've been reading too much Ann Coulter if you think that all liberals believe the same things. This one is against smoking bans.

I remember when it was a problem that Laura Bush and Dick Cheney smoked. I don't care if Obama smokes, or did or does in the White House.
Also, it is in liberal cities where there are smoking bans. In the walmart nearest to me, you can smoke inside the store. It is a liberal/Democrat thing- not a conservative/ Republican thing.

Obama doesn't smoke except when he gets caught. Liberals don't undertstand that the smoking isn't even the issue – it's Obama, our president elect, lying about it that is the concern.

You've got to be kidding, Obama can't smoke where other people are no longer allowed to smoke. THE LAW says COC is illegal! When Bush was in office it was all of a sudden "OKAY"?

Anna P should understand that while he is allowed to smoke in his own home the White House is not his home, it's federal property and smoking is illegal on federal government property.

It's still going on around here sad to say. I have no problem with a bar or restaurant owner banning smoking in their establishments. It is after all their business. What I disagree with is the government forcing them to conform. If you are against smoking and know a place allows smoking then don't go in. No one is forcing you.

Yeah, I'm sick of people complaining the the messiah does, but it funny how fast they can turn that around.

Here in New York City,,our Mayor,,Mike Bloomberg is Conservative, he is the one who placed a ban on smoking in ALL public places in the city ,,SO WHAT YOU SAY-IN? this is not a liberal issue

We implore you conservatives to keep smoking – even more than you do now. Just don't do it around us.

What are you even talking about? I live in one of the most liberal cities in the country (Portland, OR). On Jan 1 a smoking ban takes place where one cannot smoke in public places (bars, etc.) Myself and many others cannot wait for this to go into effect. It will be great to have smoke free bars. "All of the sudden it's OK"….is this the kind of stuff you just enjoy making up because Obama is a smoker? It's like you have this little idea and then make up a whole big idea about it…Also…do you think it's only 'lberals' who support smoking bans? That's loony and without any kind of basis in reality! Seriously…it's like you just make up an idea and decide it's fact. Sigh….
